The legendary Bronze Age palace at the heart of Minoan civilisation — Europe's oldest city and the supposed labyrinth of the Minotaur. Sprawling across 20,000 square metres, Knossos reveals frescoed throne rooms, ceremonial courts, elaborate drainage systems, and storage magazines that housed the wealth of a seafaring empire ruling 3,500 years ago. Sir Arthur Evans's early-20th-century reconstruction remains controversial but makes the site strikingly vivid.

The 19th-century covered market street that is the beating culinary heart of Heraklion — an outdoor food bazaar packed with stalls selling freshly cut dakos (Cretan bruschetta with tomato and mizithra cheese), loukoumades (honey doughnuts), spanakopita, grilled meats, and the finest collection of Cretan cheeses, olives, and wines to take away. A delicious and completely free spectacle.

A straightforward, honest Cretan taverna a short walk from the cruise port, popular with port workers and locals for generous portions of grilled meats, fresh fish, and classic Greek salads at genuinely affordable prices. No tourist trap pricing — the lamb chops grilled over charcoal and the village-style pork souvlaki are particularly good.

Well-organised with sunbeds, showers, water sports, and a good variety of beach bars and tavernas along the seafront. Far less crowded than Crete's south-coast beaches but very convenient from the port.

A beautiful sheltered bay of brilliant turquoise water 25km west of Heraklion — one of Crete's most picturesque beach coves, with the fishing village of Agia Pelagia perched above it. The calm, crystal-clear water is superb for snorkelling, and the tavernas directly on the beach serve some of the best fresh fish on the north coast.
