Palace of Knossos

The legendary Bronze Age palace at the heart of Minoan civilisation β€” Europe's oldest city and the supposed labyrinth of the Minotaur. Sprawling across 20,000 square metres, Knossos reveals frescoed throne rooms, ceremonial courts, elaborate drainage systems, and storage magazines that housed the wealth of a seafaring empire ruling 3,500 years ago. Sir Arthur Evans's early-20th-century reconstruction remains controversial but makes the site strikingly vivid.

The renovated building on Plateia Eleftherias is spectacular and fully modern.
