Ephesus Archaeological Site

One of the most awe-inspiring ancient cities on earth — the best-preserved Greco-Roman city in the Mediterranean, with a marble-paved main street, a library facade that once held 12,000 scrolls, a 25,000-seat theatre, Roman baths, marble brothel, and the remains of the Temple of Artemis (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World). At its peak, Ephesus was the second-largest city in the Roman Empire with a population of 250,000.

Kuşadası Grand Bazaar

A sprawling, colourful Turkish bazaar immediately adjacent to the cruise port — one of the most convenient shopping experiences on any cruise itinerary. Turkish leather, hand-painted ceramics, evil eye (nazar) jewellery, handwoven carpets, spices, and cheap counterfeit goods all jostle for space in a maze of covered lanes.

A small island connected to the mainland by a causeway, topped by a Byzantine castle fortified by the Knights of Malta in the 16th century and later used by Ottoman pirates. The castle grounds offer excellent views over the harbour and across the Aegean to the Greek island of Samos. The surrounding waters have been a national park since 1994.

House of the Virgin Mary (Meryemana)

A small stone house on the forested slopes of Mount Koressos near Ephesus, believed by Catholic tradition to be the home where the Virgin Mary spent her final years, brought to Ephesus by Saint John. The site is a significant pilgrimage destination — Pope Paul VI, John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Francis all visited. The spring water from the site is considered holy.

Kazim Usta Restaurant

The most celebrated fish restaurant in Kuşadası, run by the same family since 1955. Set in a charming restored Ottoman building, the menu is built on whatever came off the boats that morning: grilled sea bass, red mullet pan-fried with olive oil, meze platters of tarama, cacık, and octopus salad. An institution that locals and discerning visitors return to year after year.
